THE GOV. RAMIL L. HERNANDEZ BATANG LAGUNA PROGRAM
(Our Flagship Program)

Determined to place the Province of Laguna in the landscape of Philippine Sports, the Provincial Sports and Games Development Office will be conducting year-round sports clinics that will identify, develop, and nurture Laguna’s new breed of grassroots athletes who can represent Laguna and excel in prestigious local and international sports tournaments.

This August 2014, the PSGDO will be launching the GOV. RAMIL L. HERNANDEZ BATANG LAGUNA PROGRAM which will become the foundation of sports development in the Province of Laguna. The BATANG LAGUNA is a comprehensive, dynamic, and continuous sports development program which shall harness the potentials of Laguna’s U12 and U16 athletes in 19 sports disciplines including archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, dance sports, football, gymnastics, karatedo, lawn tennis, sepak-takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, and volleyball.

Moreover, this program will also serve as the province’s selection for the 2014 Batang Pinoy Luzon Leg and National Championships which will be scheduled on the last quarter of the year. The Batang Pinoy is the Philippine Sports Commission’s national grassroots sports program for in and out-of-school children aged 13-15 years old. This prestigious sporting event is supported by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Education (DepED) and various National Sports Associations (NSAs). (Please see attached DILG Memorandum Circular 2014-07)

Through the support and cooperation of the different municipalities and local sports associations, the PSGDO will implement the BATANG LAGUNA program by conducting weekend and after-class clinics, trainings and tournaments, reaching and identifying its most promising athletes and widening the base of its athletic potential in the grassroots level. The selected athletes will join the province’s elite circle of athletes and will represent Laguna in higher level sports competitions like the Palarong Pambansa and the Batang Pinoy.

This flagship program aims to:

  • develop strong and competent grassroots athletes who can provide recognition to the Province of Laguna by excelling in national and international sports competitions;
  • inculcate socially-desirable attitudes and values, like sportsmanship, respect, discipline, confidence, teamwork, and professionalism among Laguna’s young athletes preparing them to become better citizens and active participants of nation building; and
  • instill pride, honor, and solidarity among Laguna’s athletes and people through sports excellence.

THE BATANG PINOY PROGRAM
The Philippine Sports Commission’s Grassroots Program

The Batang Pinoy, also known as the Philippine Youth Games, is the Philippine Sports Commission’s national grassroots sports program for in and out-of-school children aged 13-15 years old. This prestigious sporting event is also supported by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Education (DepED) and various National Sports Associations (NSAs).

It has the following objectives:
  • Being integral part of the national policy and program for sports development will effectively address our need for a comprehensive grassroots sports program centered on values formation inherent in the practice of sports and play.
  • Inculcate in the young minds of Filipino athletes the value of patriotism, nationalism, self-discipline, respect for law and order, hard work, teamwork, camaraderie, sportsmanship and fair play, thus eliminating the child’s chances of becoming a juvenile delinquent.
  • The program can also serve as recruitment base for sports specialization including training for other high level leagues, national tournaments and international competitions.
