PSGDO cancels sporting events, steps up during pandemic

Provincial Sports and Games Development Office
June 29, 2020

After being placed under the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) due to the spread of COVID-19 in mid-March, the Province of Laguna, like the rest of Luzon, canceled most of its major programs and activities for the year to contain the virus and to address the challenges of the pandemic.

The global sporting community was seriously affected by the novel coronavirus, bringing all scheduled international and local sports events into a halt.

In Laguna, the Provincial Sports and Games Development Office (PSGDO), following the directives of Gov. Ramil L. Hernandez, canceled the implementation of all its annual sports development programs which are usually conducted during the first half of the year, in accordance to the guidelines of the national government and to ensure the safety of its stakeholders which are mostly young athletes.

Postponed programs for this year included the annual free summer sports clinics, local tournaments, selections, and trainings for regional and national tournaments.

According to Sports Development Officer Gerardo S. Cantada, PSGDO has already set aside its sports programs in the near future and will shift its priorities towards supporting the efforts of Gov. Hernandez and the Provincial Government of Laguna to address the needs of Laguneños during the pandemic.

The PSGDO is one of the first offices to respond during the start of the COVID-19 crisis. The Athletes Village located at the Laguna Sports Complex was identified as one of the COVID-19 isolation facilities in the province and PSGDO took charge of the general cleaning and installation of more than 100 regular beds and DOH-donated hospital beds in the 4-storey building.

Aside from the Athletes Village preparation, PSGDO personnel also participated in the daily repacking of food packs at the multi-purpose gymnasium of the Laguna Sports Complex.

Moreover, PSGDO also provided the majority of manpower in the food pack distribution in various cities and municipalities across the province.

Despite these trying times, PSGDO joins the rest of the sporting community in being optimistic that the current situation is temporary and our young athletes will be able to train and play again safely.
