Laguna relives its rich and colorful cultural heritage

Laguna Tourism, Culture, Arts and Trade Office

November 24, 2019

The Laguna Tourism, Culture, Arts and Trade Office (LTCATO) held the 10th Maria Carpena Kundiman Song Festival on 25 October 2019 at the Laguna Cultural Center  in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

Recognizing local Culture as the lifeblood for a vibrant society, the LTCATO holds programs and activities focusing on cultural icons of Laguna.

One such icon is Maria Carpena, soprano and Zarzuela star, first Filipino recording artist and was one of the most acclaimed artists during her time. She was born in Santa Rosa on October 22, 1886.

The Provincial Government of Laguna named the Kundiman song competition in her honor.

There were four categories in the contest- Elementary, which was won by Nicole Cassandra Olivo of Pangil; High School category was won by Althea Mignonette Pinzon of Calamba City; Open category by Roger Luntayao of San Pedro City; and Senior category by Erlinda Libornio of Santa Rosa City.

The Kundiman is a type of love song expressing the lofty sentiment of love, and even heroism in a melancholy mood.  Originating from the early 19th century, the Kundiman developed into art song in the early 20th century.

On the other hand, the LTCATO held the 4th Laguna Folk Dance Competition also at the Cultural center of Laguna on 8 November 2019.

There were three categories- Elementary, whose choices for presentation were Polka sa Nayon, a barrio ballroom polka popular in Batangas province, and Tiklos, a dance for working people of Leyte.

For High School category the dance presentation choices were Habanera Narcisena, a festive dance named after the town of San Narciso, Zambales, and Likod-likod, a wedding dance from Leyte.

For open category the choices were Buti-buti, a native dance of the Badjaos about life in the boat and the open sea, and Sua-ku-sua, a courtship dance from Jolo, Sulu.

The winner for elementary category was the PRES Dance Troupe from the Paciano Rizal Elementary School of Los Banos; for high school the winner was San Antonio de Padua College of Pila; and for the open category the winner was Bagong Lahi Dance Ensemble from Lumban.
