Laguna advances to the 20th Asean Age-Group Chess Tilt

Three Laguna chess players advanced to the 20th Asean Age-Group Championships that will be held in Mandalay City, Myanmar on June 9-19, 2019.

Athlete  Jersey B. Marticio ranked second in the individual standard event of the Under- 12 girls category of the National Age Group Chess Championship Grand Finals in Iba, Zambales, qualifying her for the Asean competition.

 On the other hand, Mark Gabriel V. Usman also qualified in the ASEAN Championship for the Under-10 boys category.

Both Marticio and Usman seized the championship in the Luzon Leg and the second place in the nationals.

 Marticio also brought home the gold and silver medals in the team blitz and individual blitz of the elementary girls’ category of the 2019 Palarong Pambansa held on April 27- May 4, 2019 in Davao City.

 Meanwhile, Jersey’s brother Jeremy B. Marticio ranked 5th in the nationals.

All players are from Biñan City and are also members of the Laguna contingent for the past and present tournaments of the Philippine Youth Games-Batang Pinoy.

 On behalf of Governor Ramil L. Hernandez, Sports Development Officer Gerardo S. Cantada congratulated the Marticios and the Laguna Chess Association headed by its President, Mr. Catalino A. Mendiogarin, for their achievements in national and international tournaments.

 The Provincial Sports and Games Development Office has recognized chess as one of its priority sports under the administration of Gov. Hernandez, where free summer sports clinics and local chess tournaments are conducted regularly as part of its commitment in developing future chess champions from Laguna.
