Symposia on teenage pregnancy benefit thousands of students

Provincial Information Office

November 12, 2018

The Laguna Provincial Population Office-Outreach (PPO-Outreach) once again conducted a series of symposia on teenage pregnancy targeting junior and senior high school students in Laguna.

In the month of September, 1,738 students from different secondary schools in the province participated in a series of lectures.

More lectures were conducted in other schools in October that gathered 784 students, bringing to 2,522 the total of students reached in just two months.

The students were presented with hard facts and figures with topics ranging from teenage pregnancy situationer, and the Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Survey (YAFS).

Factors and consequences of early sexual involvement and the presentation of Teen Choice via short film showing were among the other topics.

After every lecture, an open forum was held to clarify students’ concerns and issues on sexuality-related matters.

Considering that Laguna ranks first in the number of teenage pregnancy cases in the CALABARZON region, the activity seeks to inform the students mostly in grades 9 to 12 about adolescent pregnancy, and the social, health, and mental issues that arise from it.

Providing students such critical information can help prevent unwanted pregnancies.

It also seeks to provide them useful information on adolescent health, sexuality, reproductive health, and even sexually transmitted diseases.

The symposia were successfully conducted by PPO-Outreach, headed by Mrs. Josefina T. Yaneza, in collaboration with the Commission on Population.

Junior and senior high school teachers, PPO-Outreach District II and IV staff headed by Mrs. Genevieve J. Casabuena and Mrs. Merlinda Pereja assisted in the conduct of the said symposia.
