MISO conducts Data Privacy Awareness orientation

Management Information Systems Office

July 26, 2018

The Provincial Government of Laguna (PGL) through the Management Information Systems Office (MISO) is holding a campaign throughout the PGL to impart the National Privacy Commission (NPC)’s Data Privacy Act of 2012, or Republic Act No. 10173.

MISO started the campaign in line with the annual Privacy Awareness Week on May 28-31, 2018.  With this year’s theme “Protecting the Filipino’s Rights to Data Privacy,” MISO announced the importance of data privacy awareness during the flag raising ceremony on May 28, and briefly discussed the activities designed for the whole week.

The Privacy Awareness Team (PAT) was formed to visit PGL offices for the orientation on data privacy.  PAT was divided into three groups to conduct an orientation on data privacy awareness in all PGL offices. The main goal is to discuss brief information about data privacy.

Part of the briefing is the introduction of RA 10173 (Data Privacy Act of 2012) from the NPC.  RA 10173 is an act protecting individual personal information in Information and Communications Systems in the government and the private sector, creating for this purpose a national privacy commission, and for other purposes.

Also discussed was the topic on Rights of a Data Subject. Data subjects are the people whose personal information is collected, stored and processed according to RA 10173. Generally a data subject has the right to be informed, right to access, right to object, right to erasure or blocking, right to damages, right to file complaint, right to rectify and the right to data portability.

MISO completed the privacy awareness orientation on all the PGL offices the whole week, the first step for the compliance of PGL with the Data Privacy Act.
